Getting Started

  • Launch the app — your child lands on the home screen with Letters and Words buttons.
  • Tap the lock icon in the top-right to enter the parent area. On first use, you'll be asked to create a 4-digit passcode (enter it twice).
  • Inside the parent area, set up goals, rewards, and word lists.
  • Hand the iPad back to your child. They tap Letters or Words and start tracing.

About the Parent Passcode

The 4-digit passcode protects the parent area and reward redemptions. It is stored only as a one-way SHA-256 hash on your iPad — we never see it, and it never leaves your device.

If you forget your passcode:

Because we don't store or transmit your passcode, we cannot reset it for you. To recover access, delete the Inkcentive app from your iPad and reinstall it from the App Store. This will set the app back to a fresh state and let you create a new passcode — but it will also erase all goals, rewards, word lists, and star history. We recommend writing the passcode down somewhere safe.

"Check My Work" Recognition

When your child taps Check My Work, Inkcentive uses Apple's on-device Vision framework to read what they wrote and compare it to the template. A few notes:

  • Recognition runs only when the button is tapped — never in the background.
  • The drawing never leaves the iPad. It is not sent to us, Apple, or anyone else.
  • Early handwriting is messy by nature. The check is a guide, not a grade — repeating a letter that wasn't recognized is part of the practice.

Goals and Stars

In the parent area, you can create goals for time practiced, letter count, word count, completing the alphabet, or specific letters and words. Each goal is worth 1–3 stars, with optional daily or weekly limits.

Stars are spent on rewards you set up — anything from 5 minutes of TV to picking the next family movie. Rewards can be instant (kid taps, you enter the passcode, they redeem) or save-up (kid contributes stars over time toward a bigger reward).

Device Requirements

  • iPad, iPadOS 17.0 or later
  • Landscape orientation (the app is landscape-only)
  • Apple Pencil supported, but not required — finger drawing works equally well
  • No iPhone or Mac version at this time

Privacy

Inkcentive does not collect, transmit, or share any data. It makes no network requests. See the privacy policy for details.

Is Inkcentive Right for My Child?

We've written a separate page on age suitability and what's (not) in the app for parents deciding whether Inkcentive fits their child.
